INVITATION FOR NOMINEES TO THE AGRICULTURE AND FOOD AUTHORITY (AFA) BOARD 

1. INTRODUCTION
Section 5 (1) (i) of the Agriculture and Food Authority Act, No. 13 of 2013 as amended through
the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendments) Act, 2016 provides for the membership of the Board of
Agriculture and Food Authority(AFA) as follows;
“Eight persons being farmers, representing farmer organizations in the major crop sub-sectors in
Kenya appointed by the Cabinet Secretary in consultation with the Council of County Governors.”
In this regard the Cabinet Secretary invites bona fide farmer Organizations representing the various crop
subsectors under the Authority’s purview namely: Sugar, Coffee, Nuts crops, Food crops, Horticultural
Crops, Fibre crops, Miraa crops and Pyrethrum.
2. THE NOMINATING FARMER ORGANIZATION MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
a) The organization must have members from across the geographical regions where crop is grown in
Kenya. The organization should provide a list of its members;
b) The organization must have been in existence for a period of at least 3 years in the preceding 3 -year
period;
c) The farmers’ organization should provide its constitution or memorandum and Articles of Association
and Certificate of Incorporation/Registration and a list of its officials or Directors;
d) Each Organization must provide names of the three nominees out of which at least one must be of a
different gender to meet the one-third gender rule;
e) The organization must specify the farming specialization of the farmer nominated e.g. whether a
coffee, maize farmer, sugar cane or other crop;
3. ELIGIBILITY OF NOMINEES
a) The nominees must meet the minimum professional qualifications as provided under Section 5(4)(a)
of AFA Act, i.e;
i. Hold a degree in the relevant field from a university recognized in Kenya;
ii. Have proven business management or other relevant professional experience;
iii. Have served in the position of senior management for a period of at least six years;
iv. Should not have served in the same entity as an employee in the preceding five years;
v. Meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
vi. Meet the requirements of fit and proper test.
Names of Nominees must be sent to the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development
so as to reach the office on or before 24th January 2023 Noon.
Letters must be clearly marked on the envelope “NOMINATION FOR AFA BOARD.”
