1.0 About Plan International

Plan International is an independent global child rights organisation committed to supporting vulnerable and marginalised children and their communities to be free from poverty. We place specific focus on girls and young people’s lives. For over 80 years, we have supported girls and boys and their communities around the world to gain the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to claim their rights, free themselves from poverty and live positive fulfilling lives. Plan International has been operating in Kenya since 1982 and continues to work in ten (10) counties: Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado, Tharaka Nithi, Siaya, Kilifi, Kwale, Homabay Kisumu and recently Tana River.

2.0 Overview of the Break Free Programme

The Break Free programme is an initiative of Plan International Netherlands, SRHR Africa Trust (SAT) and Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) in collaboration with the technical partners The Royal Tropical Institute KIT’ and ‘Rozaria Memorial Trust’ (RMT). The aim of the “Break Free!” Consortium is for adolescents to exercise their right to live free from FGM, Teenage Pregnancy (TP) and Child Marriage (CM), supported by civil society. In Kenya, the Break Free Programme is implemented by a consortium of three organisations namely; Plan International Kenya, Forum for African Women Educationalist (FAWE) and SRHR Africa Trust (SAT). The programme will be running for a period of 5 years from January 2021 to December 2025 and will be implemented in Kajiado, Tharaka and Tana River Counties.

The programme has the following three pathways of Change; Outcome 1: Adolescent girls at risk of CM/TP and FGM/C have access to quality education in a safer school environment with improved participation, retention and completion, Outcome 2: Duty Bearers and decision makers at national and county level, review, resource and implement laws and policies that respond to adolescents’ needs, Outcome 3: Adolescent girls and boys access quality SRHR education, information and youth friendly services.

In the Break Free! target areas, young people grow up and become sexually active, without access to timely, appropriate, gender- responsive, quality SRHR education, information and services. This makes them vulnerable to unintended pregnancies, often followed by CM. In order for the programme to ensure appropriate adolescent, effective and youth responsive and appropriate SRHR interventions, a KAP survey has been planned to support the delivery adolescent appropriate interventions.

3.0 The purpose of the KAP Survey

The purpose of the BREAK FREE KAP Survey is primarily to gain understanding of communities’ perceptions, knowledge and awareness, their attitudes, behaviours and practises regarding SRHR. The information will act as part of programme specific information to which the programme will monitor, assess and learn from its progress and effectiveness. It will help the consortium to understand and assess the degree and quality of (expected and unexpected) change during its implementation.
